The Pantry
Transforming the first floor of the building into an accessible food pantry provides the community with a safe environment and diminishes the negative stigma of a food bank into a positive impact. The Pantry includes a central information station, loading dock, upright freezer and coolers, accessible shelving for dry food, dry storage, sorting room, private huddle rooms, conference and seminar rooms, staff offices, volunteer storage, and a shared café space. Although The Pantry is only on the first floor, these concepts are implemented throughout the building to create a cohesive design.
The Senses
Cognitive development in a child is imperative to shaping who they become. By providing a space for each age range to have their senses stimulated, it allows healthy growth in a safe environment. The Senses ranges from infants to young adults with the numerous different areas throughout. For infants, a sensory station can be used to see how they respond to different materials and elements, such as water, dirt, sand, etc. For the teens of the community, a centralized learning hub has been added for group collaboration on school projects to ensure they have proper support.
The Table
The Table is an afterschool program that provides an enriching learning experience through food. The live cooking classes will teach the youth of tomorrow the importance of nutrition, cooking safety, and establish relationships with peers and within their families. By bridging the generational gap within families in the community, this will help the children feel they have an established support system they can always go to. It helps the youth embrace the importance of family, which can come in any form.
The Refresh
In a world with rapidly growing technology, sometimes it can be hard to be present in the moment. The Refresh provides a place where the visitor can unwind from society around them. The soft colors and smooth surfaces provide a contrast to the rest of the building which ensures they do not get overstimulated in the space. This program provides the community with the necessary tools to learn how to be comfortable in the presence of quiet and gives clarity as needed.
